Polythene bags were accidentally invented: Polythene, the material used to make plastic bags, was accidentally discovered in 1933 by two scientists at the Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) lab in England. They were experimenting with gases under high pressure and heat when they stumbled upon the waxy substance we now know as polythene.
